A migraine is a condition which is characterised by recurrent headaches that are moderate to severe. It typically affects one side of the head and is pulsating in nature in which the pain can last from two hours to 72 hours long. Symptoms of a migraine may include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light, sound, and smell.
There are several factors that may contribute to a migraine which include:
- Certain foods like caffeinated drinks or dairy
- Lack of sleep
- Hormonal changes
Migraine can be controlled by leading a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise and a healthy diet may help reduce the frequency of migraine attacks. Avoiding foods and stimuli that can trigger a migraine attack also helps.
However, there can be times when you suddenly have a migraine attack. Following is tips shared by Dr. Ezairy M.Sallih that you can use to alleviate the pain during this attack.
1. Find a calm environment
Retreat from your current activity if possible and find a calm, quiet place to rest. As a migraine often caused someone to be sensitive to light and sound, try to relax in a dark and quiet room. Sleep if you can.
2. Massage your neck and head
Massage in the neck and head regions can help to relax taught bands of tissue, loosening the muscles attached to the base of the skull, which causes pain through the tension that travels up through the back of the head and into the eye areas.
3. Temperature therapy
Apply hot or cold compresses to your neck and head. Ice packs have a numbing effect, which may dull the sensation of pain. Hot packs and heating pads can relax tense muscles. Warm showers or baths may have a similar effect.
4. Unwind at the end of the day
Spend a me-time for yourself. Take a deep breath and try picture a calming image.
5. Reduce stress
If you keep having migraines, try to distance yourself from a busy schedule and stress.
6. Avoid foods that can trigger your migraine
Identify which food that can cause you a migraine and reduce caffeinated drinks and avoid smoking. It is also crucial for you to eat regularly especially for those who tend to have a migraine due to a low level of blood glucose.
