Have you heard of the Japanese proverb, “Better than a thousand days of diligent studies is one day with a great teacher” before? It shows how important teachers are and it is only natural that Mithat Okhan Onan, the pilot on duty from Turkish Airlines surprised his former teacher in aviation school when he boarded the plane. It definitely brought him to his tears.
The lucky teacher is Selahattin Onan, who is also the Mithat’s father.
The surprise event started with the in-flight video showing a group of pilots that were once Selahattin’s students. In the video, they shared the experiences that they had with the teacher and greeted him Happy Teacher’s Day. Selahattin choked upon watching the video and looked as if he was trying to hold back his tears a few times.
As soon as the video ended, Mithat’s voice was heard across the airplane giving a very beautiful speech.
“Dear passengers, this is your captain speaking. Today is an important day. For 6 years I’ve been a pilot as part of the Turkish Airlines family, and much of that is due to the efforts of my teacher Selahattin Onan, a long-serving teacher who is with us on this place today. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to call your teacher someone who is like a father to you. He was a captain pilot for 20 years, and for 10 years a guide to thousands of pilots like me, raising them up like his children. I speak for all his students right now in expressing my infinite gratitude and I’m so eternally grateful. I’m so glad you were my teacher. So glad you were my teacher. So glad that you’re my father.”
The momentous event was recorded by Turkish Airlines and posted to YouTube on November 24 and had readers crying and commenting online.
Selahattin burst into tears as soon as the beautiful speech ended.
A few pilots presented him with a bouquet of flowers while Selahattin was wiping his tears.
Selahattin accepted the beautiful bouquet from his students.
Mithat came out from the airplane cockpit to meet his father—kissed his hand and gave him a big hug to thank him for all that he has done.
That wonderful moment not only moved Selahattin to tears but also touched the hearts of the rest of the boarding passengers.
We are holding our tears as we are writing this and we would like to take this chance to thank all the teachers in this world! Thank you!
