Historically, the job of a truck driver has been occupied by men, but in recent times there has been an increase in the number of women pursuing the occupation.

21-year-old Rino Sasaki from Japan is one of the handfuls of female truckers who has chosen to make their living on the open road.

Rino decided to give up her dream job of becoming a dance instructor in order to help her lorry-driver father after he became ill.

She took her HGV license so she could accompany her father on long trips and ease his burden by taking shifts.

She recalled, “I really enjoyed teaching the Kimono traditional Japanese dance but I could not let my father drive by himself when I saw him sick. So, I left everything and chose to support my father”.

Truck drivers play an essential role as they provide a much-needed service to industrialized societies by transporting goods across long distances over land, typically from manufacturing plants to distribution centers. The long hours on the road proves to be both physically and mentally taxing to the driver.
