When 18 year-old Laura Hillier passed away of cancer, her family and friends decided to give tribute and a glimpse of the graduation she missed.

It's been two years today since Laura was taken from us. So many changes to the Canadian health system have happened…

Laura was 13 when she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. It is the rapid growth of abnormal cells that build up in the bone marrow and blood, eventually interrupting the flow of normal blood cells.

She went into remission after receiving continuous aggressive treatments. Unfortunately, it only lasted four years before the cancer returned. She was listed for stem cell therapy and was fortunate enough to secure a donor.

However, fate got the better of her when she was denied treatment due to lack of hospital bed availability. She passed away on January 16, 2016. Her support group Facebook page, Hope for Laura was filled with encouraging words and messages of condolences.

In an attempt to honor her battle, her casket was turned into a colorful yearbook.

Using a variety of colored markers, friends and family wrote goodbye messages and last tributes on her white casket. It was entirely covered with words of many colors, especially purple as it was Laura’s favorite.

“She fought bravely and all of you would have been so proud of her. Her poise, her courage, her strength and her pure spirit shone through right until the end,” read her parents’ farewell note.

This message below was posted in her Facebook page when she was still battling cancer:

“The strongest woman to ever grace the world. Please pray for her and for the chance that she can defy the odds. Laura’s strength knows no bounds and despite the pain she has faced, she continues to hold onto hope. Please hold onto it and send her your hope.”

Laura may have passed, but her spirit lives on in every person who keeps her in their thoughts.
