Nothing made Amber Rojas more excited than when she knew that she was pregnant for the fourth time. But this time around, unlike her previous pregnancies, Amber felt that something was different. Her husband, Fernando, simply thought Amber’s hunch was because they wanted to keep their new baby’s gender as a surprise until the day Baby Amadeus was born that proved Amber’s intuition was indeed correct.
Amber and Fernando already have four other children including a pair of twins.
For their fifth children, they decided to wait until the day of the birth to find out about the baby’s gender
“Since this was my fourth and last pregnancy and fifth baby and I’ve literally laboured every way possible, I wanted to leave something to surprise,” Amber told. “Something different to look forward to, especially because we really were not planning to have anymore.”
Amber’s fifth and last pregnancy was smooth and she never had any complications. Yet, she had always had a hunch that her recent pregnancy was different. “I didn’t know why or what but I always told my husband this baby was going to be different.”
Amber and Fernando opted for water birth and they hired a birth photographer to capture the precious moment. A week before her due date, Amber started showing signs of labour so they quickly drove to the birthing centre which Amber had gone for her previous deliveries.
Five minutes after she entered the pool for her water birth, she gave birth to Amadeus and Amber instantly realised what her intuition had been trying to tell her about
“Next thing I know my sweet baby is in my arms and so many emotions, and as soon as I look down I saw it. I saw it in my baby’s face. I thought to myself… my baby has Down syndrome”
For the first few minutes after Amadeus was born, the family was ecstatically happy when they knew that Amadeus was a girl with the other four children quickly infatuated with the newborn.
It was at that time when the midwife who checked Amadeus said that she shows signs of Down syndrome.
“In that moment I was like I knew it!” she said
Amadeus had to spend five days after her birth at the hospital due to a congenital heart defect
Nevertheless, Amber and her family never thought that Baby Amadeus was less special than her siblings.
“We didn’t care that she had Down syndrome because we were all obsessed with her and all of her chromosomes!” said Amber
The couple wanted to learn as much as they could about Down syndrome so that they could provide as much love and support for their youngest daughter.
“We are learning together about a whole community that we never knew anything about!”
“But at the end of the day she IS our baby and we are her FAMILY! To us she is perfect!” said Amber.
