It has been 22 years since they first met but Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman can still recall the day he first laid his eyes on his wife Deborra-lee Furness.

When the couple first met, Jackman, 50, was still in his early 20s and new in acting career. He had just booked his first acting gig on the Australian TV series Correlli.

Furness, 63, who is 13 years his senior was starring in the same series.

“My first job out of drama school—it was a massive break for me. I was really scared,” he told PEOPLE in his interview.

“Deb, she was a big star. I get picked up, and Deb is in the front seat of the car. I’ll never forget. She took off her seatbelt and she turned around and put out her hand and took off her sunglasses and said, ‘Hi, I’m Deborra-lee Furness, nice to meet you.’ I remember thinking, ‘I like this girl.’”

They became best friends and soon enough he started to have a crush on her.

He realized it was unprofessional and embarrassing to have a crush on her leading lady. So he tried not to talk to her for a week but soon enough he knows this won’t work.

Jackman later invited Furness over for a dinner and that was when Furness asked why he ignored her the entire week.

“She said, ‘I noticed you haven’t talked to me in like a week, what’s going on?’ I said, ‘I got a crush on you. I’ll get over it, I’m sorry.’ She goes, ‘Oh? Because I’ve got a crush on you too.’”

“I never in a million years thought she reciprocated.”

The couple later tied the knot in 1996 and the two are still madly in love with each other as Jackman showed his love to Furness on their anniversary last year in a romantic message on Instagram.

“I believe in life we need to see and truly be seen by the most important people in our lives. Deb, from day one, we had that. 22 years later … it only gets deeper,” the star wrote.

“You and the kids are the greatest gift I will ever receive. I love you a gazillion times around the world.”
