In April of 2019, an incredible incident occurred off the Gulf in Thailand: the staff at an oil rig in the middle of the ocean spotted a dog out sea swimming towards the area. They wondered how the poor pooch reached them when the land was as much as 135 miles (approx. 217 kilometers) from the oil rig. It was unclear how the dog drifted out to sea and came to them.
▼ Workers in an oil well in the Gulf of Thailand rescued a dog swimming in the open ocean toward their area. The workers saw the pooch’s head through the ripples of the ocean water as she paddles her way to them on a midday Friday.

▼ Oil rig worker Khon Vitisak called out to his colleagues for help. When the dog finally reached the rig, she rested on the rusty iron bars of the oil well and was rescued by the staff.

▼ The exhausted brown female Aspin was drifting out in open water for a long time and is now resting on the platform dripping wet from seawater. The well-behaved dog fell fast asleep from where she lay after her rescue.

▼ Oil rig worker Khon Vitisak, who rescued the Aspin, prepared food and water for her which she immediately accepted. Given time, the poor pooch regained her strength. However, the workers were left baffled by how she reached the middle of the ocean.

▼ The exhausted dog immediately fell asleep after having her meal. She did not seem to move from the place where she first stood when she arrived at the oil rig.

▼ The dog was rescued in the Gulf of Thailand, which is south of the country and to the west of Cambodia and Vietnam. It is 135 miles (about 217 kilometers) from the nearest land. How did the dog reach the middle of the ocean?

▼ The staff speculated that the dog jumped into the sea from a boat and is unable to climb back aboard. She lost so much body water from her long swim out at sea. However, it was replenished after giving her lots of fluids and vitamins.

▼ The staff set up a temporary cage for the dog while she was at the oil rig. The dog, which was not yet given a name, looks at her temporary home.

▼ The dog rested on the oil rig for 2 days. She was lifted by a crane to a passing oil tanker and brought to Songkhla Province in southern Thailand. She was sent to a veterinarian for a thorough examination and was found to be in good health.

▼ Oil rig worker Khon Vitisak decided to adopt the dog. The staff said their goodbyes and put a lei of flowers around her neck, as she was sent to the mainland with her new owner, who named her Boonrod.

“We have checked on Boonrod again this evening, and she is fine,” Mr. Khon Vitisak said. “She has a lot of energy. We still don’t know how she was in the water 220 km. from the shore. It’s a miracle that we found her. I hope to adopt her as a pet. I am looking forward to spending many happy years together with her.”
