A German Shepherd named Abbey, who Played Sam in the film ‘I Am Legend’, is Now 13yo and Still Doing Great

If you have watched the apocalyptic sci-fi movie ‘I Am Legend’, a film that was released 10 years ago, you will notice that the main characters are played by Will Smith alongside a German Shepherd whose name is Abbey. After so many years, Abbey is still doing great and is now 13 years old. She lives with her family and trainer, Steve Berens.

“She’s older now, and she doesn’t hear hardly anything. But she’s still kicking. She still likes a ball and likes a bone,” Steve said during an interview. “When you work with a lot of actors, they’re not that interested in the animal – a lot of actors look at it as something that the audience is going to be looking at instead of them. But Will was not at all like that. He understood that this was his co-star, and he really dug it and really got into it. I think that she really liked him, and that made a difference.”

In an interview, Will Smith said that he lost a dog in a car accident when he was still a kid, and he made a promise never to have another pet since the pain was too much for him to bear. However, while filming the movie, his relationship with Abbey was too strong on set that he asked her trainer if he could keep Abbey.

“I was begging him,” Will said. “I was like, please, let me have Abbey. Please, please, please let me have her. But, you know, she has her own family now, so it was just another one of those fleeting Hollywood romances.”

Here are some video clips from the movie wherein it shows the bond between Will and Abbey is evident:
